Acne is a common skin condition characterized by blockage and inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit (the hair follicle, hair shaft and sebaceous gland) that affects mostly the face, back and chest. There are several variants of acne. The most common type is acne vulgaris, which presents with lesions which can be non-inflammatory, inflammatory or a mixture of both. Other forms of acne include fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis), cystic acne, hormonal acne and nodular acne. Established treatments for acne include topical retinoids, hormone therapy, topical or oral antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, lasers and light devices. New treatments on the horizon include clascoterone cream, a recently approved androgen receptor inhibitor and newer formulations of isotretinoin with higher bioavailability.
