Scars are the visible marks that remain on the skin after a wound, injury, surgery or skin condition has healed. They are a natural part of the body’s healing process, forming when the skin’s collagen fibres are rearranged as the damaged tissue is repaired. Scars can vary in appearance, texture and colour depending on factors such as the depth and type of injury, genetics and the individual’s skin type. There are several types of scars, including normal, keloid, hypertrophic, atrophic and contractive scars, and stretch marks. While scars cannot be completely removed, there are various treatments for improving their appearance, such as topical treatments, laser therapy, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and surgical procedures. The choice of treatment depends on the type and severity of the scar as well as individual preferences.
