Aesthetic (or cosmetic) dermatology is a specialized branch of dermatology that focuses on enhancing the appearance of the skin, hair and nails using various noninvasive, minimally invasive and surgical procedures. Unlike medical dermatology, which primarily deals with diagnosing and treating skin disorders and diseases, aesthetic dermatology aims to improve the overall aesthetic qualities of the skin and related features. Aesthetic dermatologists offer a range of treatments and procedures, such as wrinkle reduction (e.g. Botox and fillers), skin rejuvenation (chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser therapy) and scar treatment (e.g. microneedling and lasers for stretch marks and other scars). Other treatments offered include hair restoration (e.g. hair transplantation and platelet-rich plasma therapy), skin tightening, skin resurfacing and cosmetic injectables. Aesthetic procedures are typically elective and require careful consideration and a thorough understanding of the potential risks and benefits.
