Dr Brittany Dulmage on supporting cancer patients through dermatologic side effects: touchDERMATOLOGY Future Leaders 2026

We are delighted to welcome Dr Brittany Dulmage as a touchDERMATOLOGY Future Leader 2026.

Brittany Dulmage, MD, FAAD, is a US board-certified dermatologist and Associate Professor of Dermatology at The Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH, USA. She specializes in oncodermatology, providing supportive dermatological care for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Dr Dulmage’s clinical research focuses on preventing and managing the dermatological adverse effects of cancer therapies. Her notable work includes evaluating scalp cooling to reduce chemotherapy-induced alopecia and developing approaches to manage treatment-related skin toxicities without compromising cancer care.

Alongside her clinical and research work, Dr Dulmage oversees dermoscopy training for the dermatology residency program at OSU. Her commitment to medical education has been recognized with seven Excellence in Teaching Awards.

In this Q&A, Dr Dulmage discusses the path that led her to oncodermatology, the mentor who shaped her focus on cancer-related skin care, and the innovations that are driving progress in this emerging field.

Q: What drew you to dermatology, and how did your interest in your current area of focus develop?

I entered medical school with a broad interest in oncology, cultivated by my earlier basic science research into cancer genetics, and I quickly realized that caring for patients with cancer involves contributions from many different specialties.

Separate from this, I was also drawn to dermatology as a visual specialty, in which physical examination is central to diagnosis and there is a strong emphasis on patients’ quality of life. During medical school, I found a way to combine these interests through work on cutaneous lymphomas, a rare group of cancers affecting the skin.

During residency, I discovered another way to combine my interests through the emerging field of oncodermatology. I now care for patients experiencing hair, skin, or nail side effects from cancer treatment, helping to manage their symptoms and support their ongoing treatment. My research interests include hair loss in patients with breast cancer and cutaneous reactions to emerging oncology therapies.

Q: Is there a specific patient, mentor, or experience that shaped your path in this field?

One of my most influential mentors was Dr Jennifer Choi, who was Director of the Division of Oncodermatology at Northwestern during my residency. She introduced me to the breadth and impact of oncodermatology and helped me recognize it as the field I wanted to pursue. An outstanding clinician, she also modeled compassionate and collaborative care for patients with cancer.

“I am excited by the growing recognition of the importance of oncodermatological care, which is driving the development of new clinical trials, guidelines, and therapies specifically for this patient population.”
